Board templates give new boards a ready-made structure — fields, groups, and automation rules — so you don’t have to rebuild the same setup every time you start a project, onboard a client, or spin up a team board.
What a Template Contains
A template captures a board’s structure, not its content:
- Fields, including their type, options (such as status labels and colors), and settings
- Groups, with their names, colors, and order
- Automation rules
Items, comments, files, and time entries are never part of a template. A board created from a template starts empty, ready for your team’s work.
Creating a Board from a Template
- In the workspace, create a new board.
- In the New board dialog, find the Templates section — it defaults to Blank board.
- Click Use template to open the template picker.
- Pick a Built-in template or one of your Workspace templates. Each entry shows how many fields and groups it includes.
- If you haven’t typed a board name yet, it’s pre-filled with the template’s name — change it as needed.
- Choose the board group and appearance, then click Create board.
The new board opens with the template’s fields, groups, and automation rules in place.
The Built-In Templates
Every workspace has access to eight built-in templates:
| Template | Good for |
|---|---|
| Sprint Planning | Planning and tracking sprint work |
| Project Tracking | General projects with phases and owners |
| Bug Tracker | Reporting, prioritizing, and fixing bugs |
| Content Calendar | Planning and publishing content |
| Sales Pipeline | Following leads and deals through stages |
| Marketing Campaign | Coordinating campaign tasks and channels |
| Hiring Pipeline | Moving candidates through the hiring process |
| Support Tickets | Handling incoming customer requests |
Built-in templates are a starting point: once the board exists, rename fields, add status options, or remove anything you don’t need.
Saving a Board as a Workspace Template
When a board’s setup works well, save it so the whole workspace can reuse it.
From the board:
- Open the board’s Settings → Templates.
- Click Create template.
- Enter a Name (e.g. “Client Onboarding”) and choose an Icon.
- Click Create.
From the workspace settings:
- Go to Workspace Settings → Templates.
- Click Create template.
- Pick the Source board, then enter a name and choose an icon.
- Click Create.
The template takes a snapshot of the board’s current fields, groups, and automation rules. Later changes to the source board don’t change the template — create a new template if the board’s setup evolves.
Who Can Do What
- Any workspace member who can edit boards can create a template from a board and use templates when creating boards.
- Only workspace owners and admins can delete workspace templates.
- Built-in templates can’t be changed or deleted.
Deleting a Workspace Template
- Open Workspace Settings → Templates (or a board’s Settings → Templates page).
- Click the delete icon next to the template and confirm.
Deleting a template doesn’t affect boards that were already created from it.
Tips
- Give templates names that describe the workflow, not the original board — “Client Onboarding” rather than “ACME Q3”.
- After creating a board from a template, open Board Settings → Automation and check that each copied rule still points at the fields and groups you expect before relying on it.
- Pair templates with public forms: set up a form on the new board so requests flow in from day one.
